Field Work is an integral part of the programme of training in social work. It consists of practicing social work under the guidance of trained field instructors in selected social welfare agencies and organizations. It enables the student to see the applicability of theoretical knowledge taught in the classroom to actual situations requiring social work intervention. It is both goal-oriented to solve a particular problem to which the student addresses his / her activities and learner-centered in relation to his / her particular interest areas and aptitudes. Field work has the dual purpose of promoting the student’s own learning while contributing to the development of the people with whom he / she works, especially the disadvantaged sections of our society.



  • Provide opportunity for the integration of classroom learning and field practice and vice versa (feedback mechanism for both class and field).
  • Develop skills through learning how to utilize the knowledge learnt in the classroom for analysis of problems affecting the target groups and selection of the appropriate means for problem-solving.
  • Cultivate attitudes, values and commitments of the profession and those relevant to working with the most disadvantaged sections of society.
  • Develop awareness of self and the way in which student’s behaviour is affected by past experiences and cultural factors, and the way in which these affect the perceptions of their response to others.


Students will be required to maintain regular recordings of the fieldwork done during the course of their study. 

All students are required to dress soberly and appropriately, giving due respect to the socio-cultural practices of the people whom they work with while at fieldwork. A similar sobriety in dress code is also expected from students within the College premises and hostels.


Field Action Projects

The College has always been keenly aware of the need to provide relevant and effective services to people, especially in those areas where services are inadequate or non-existent. Over the years, therefore, many innovative projects were initiated to address the needs of vulnerable groups such as street children, construction workers, children of commercial sex workers, tribals in remote areas and other similar groups. 

Our main field action projects include Prerana, Vatsalya, Vasundhara, Sakhya, Setu, Pratham, Nirman, Salokha, Ankur and Anubhav Mumbai. Some of these projects have moved on to become independent NGOs and continue to contribute to the development of these groups today. 

The field action projects have also been a source of inspiration to our students and staff, who get the opportunity to practice and examine social work theory in the project arena. The current projects of the college are: 


(Working with the student and non-student youth of suburban colleges and communities)

It started in 1997, with the objectives of mobilizing youth and raising their social consciousness in order to equip them with skills of social responsibilities and self awareness. It aspires to build a cadre of youth leaders. Anubhav conducts training programmes, exposure visits, camps and exchange programmes to meet its objectives and make youth responsible citizens.

(Activities Related to the Organization of Education, Health and Nutrition)

AROEHAN began working in the tribal block of Mokhada in Thane district from July 2006. Its objective is to reduce and subsequently eliminate malnutrition. The project was initiated in the aftermath of several incidents of deaths of tribal children reported in the newspapers in March 2006. The Chief Secretary to the Government of Maharashtra also requested the College to consider working in collaboration with the Government to address specifically the issues related to health and nutrition in the area.
